Project: Predicting the unpredictable: the role of eco-evolutionary experience in species interactions across taxa and habitats

Research: My research aims to develop a predictive framework for assessing impact of invasive species. Various tools are available to help, and it is my role to further refine them and show their implementation in a real-world context in the field. Specifically, it includes recent advancements in metrics comparing invader/native trophic analogues such as the Relative Impact Potential (RIP) metric. Further, recent formalisation of eco-evolutionary experience (EEE) frameworks will benefit from being further refined, which assesses previous eco-evolutionary history of analogous species, or an archetype, in novel settings. I have the potential to look at multi-species systems, with mammals, birds and plants being important for me to focus, and invertebrates being a beneficial study system to further develop for specific contexts. Life history traits of species are important to consider, as well as temporal/spatial variation in a resource. While also considering changing habitats, this gives me the opportunity to consider range-shifts and reintroduction of previously native species to habitats that have changed from a historic baseline. Data collection will be by a range of methods, from meta-analysis, lab experiments, and being out in the field.
