Project: Exploring Past Biodiversity in Scotland and Ireland using Environmental Ancient DNA
Supervisors: Dr Linus Girdland Flink, Dr Gill Plunkett, & Professor Gordon Noble
Undergraduate Education: BSc Biological Sciences, University of Birmingham
Postgraduate Education: MSc Bioarchaeology, University of York
Research: I will apply ancient DNA techniques to soil and sediment samples from Scottish and Irish archaeological sites and combine the resulting data with pollen and macro-fossil analyses to assess flora and fauna. This data will provide insight into past biodiversity, and will contribute to reconstruction of the environment and activity local to the sites. As a result, I hope to demonstrate the utility of routine environmental ancient DNA analysis alongside traditional archaeological techniques to address questions surrounding regional biodiversity and ecosystems.
